Although Blandford Forum’s history stretches back to Saxon times, it owes its appearance today mainly to the Great Fire of 1731 which destroyed many of the buildings in the town centre. The town was largely rebuilt over the next 3 decades, creating a unique ensemble of 18th century architecture. There are numerous listed buildings in and around the town centre, including many private homes. A map showing the main buildings of interest can be downloaded here.
Much more information about the town’s history and buildings can be found in the Heritage Trail leaflet produced by the Blandford and District Civic Society, which can be bought from the Information Office.
Blandford’s unique architecture is highlighted every year as part of the Dorset Architectural Heritage week, and in guided walks around the town organised during the summer months by the Civic Society. Please see our Events Diary for more information.
